Connotative and Denotative
Denoted Meaning – Is to do with the simple identification of the components of the image.
Connotative Meaning – Is to do with the meaning read by the audience (implied meaning). It can also be derived from the intended meaning of the filmmaker or cinematographer.
Technical Codes – A significant part of the language is derived from the ways in which the film is constructed – that is, the technical aspects of filmmaking. Even though the audience may not be consciously aware of the tech processes that the filmmaker is using, the effect of their use will be to advance the sense of reality that the filmgoer experiences when sitting in the cinema. The term code is used to describe the components of this language. Film’s technical codes are:
Genre – is a style or type of film or television programme; for example, musical, horror, soapie, news, and documentary. Within a genre there are certain similarities of style, characterisation and story.
